Prince William hailed the “beauty and sheer remoteness” of Namibia’s landscape as he spotted a rare black rhino during a trip to learn about wildlife conservation.

The Duke of Cambridge joined rangers on a 5am trek in Kunene, where he spotted a critically endangered black rhino, as well as elephants and giraffes.

The prince also met with those from the Kunene People’s Park Initiative, which provides Namibian communities with greater control and benefits from their wildlife.

He said afterwards: “I was staggered by the beauty and sheer remoteness of this incredible landscape. And I was humbled by the dedication of the rangers who protect the unique population of desert rhino from poachers.

"Whatever approach we take to end wildlife crime, it must be based on evidence of what works on the ground with local communities. This why I wanted to come to Namibia — to listen and learn.”

William will also visit Tanzania and Kenya, as part of his private working trip in his capacity as president of United for Wildlife and patron of Tusk Trust. The UK government will host the 2018 conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade next month.

Speaking during the trip at a British High Commissioner’s reception in Windhoek, he added that conservation was an issue “very close to my heart”.
