Prince Charles got a cuddle from a boy in Bucharest on the third day of his charm offensive around Europe.

Charles, 68, was on a tour of the Romanian capital’s old town today when Valentin Blacker, 11, walked up to him and gave him a hug.

Valentin is the son of writer William Blacker, who is a friend of the Prince.

Charles had been looking at a statue of Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for the Dracula legend, who is his distant ancestor.

The Prince has two properties in Transylvania and enjoys painting in Romania. Mr Blacker, who wrote an acclaimed travel book on the country, said: “Prince Charles loves my son, they have met many times during his visits here.” Valentin said: “It’s not the first time I’ve hugged him.”

Charles’s nine-day tour is intended to reassure EU nations that Britain remains a close ally despite Brexit.

His next stop is Florence, where he will be joined by the Duchess of Cornwall. He will also visit Austria.
