Barack Obama has credit card rejected while trying to pay at New York restaurant

Awkward admission: US President Barack Obama

He may be the leader of the Free World, but it appears even Barack Obama is not immune to embarrassing episodes when it's time to pay.

The US President revealed today that he had trouble settling a bill at a restaurant in New York during the UN General Assembly last month.

Speaking at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in New York, he made the candid admission that his credit card was rejected at the till.

“I went to a restaurant up in New York during the UN General Assembly and my credit card was rejected," he said.

The admission came as he signed an executive order tightening controls on debit and credit cards.

But - no doubt keen to avoid accusations of financial mismanagement - President Obama revealed a logical explanation for the incident.

"It turned out I guess I don’t use it enough, so they thought there was some fraud going on," he said, before joking: "I was trying to explain to the waitress, ‘No, I really think that I’ve been paying my bills.'"
