A police officer shot his own son after mistaking him for an intruder, authorities have said.

The victim, in his 20s, was hit in his arm after his father fired at him in their home garage on Saturday.

He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It is not known if the officer used his police gun or a personal weapon to shoot his son.

DeSoto Police said they have launched an investigation. No arrests or charges have been made.

DeSoto police public information officer Pete Schulte delivers an update after the an off-duty Dallas police officer shot his son by accident.
NBC 5 News

Speaking at a press conference, police public information officer Pete Schulte said there was “no indication of foul play” at the Dallas home.

He said: “Our understanding from talking to the officer – it was a mistake – he thought that there might have been an intruder in the house, he didn’t know who was supposed to be there and so forth. It was a startling situation - it was an accident.

“And, fortunately, we are very happy it did not result in any serious bodily injury or death- we are very pleased about that."

Mr Schulte added that the police officer did not realise his son was at home and the house was not in the “state he left it in”.

DeSoto police are urging Dallas residents not to take it upon themselves to investigate incidents at home.

Mr Schulte added: “We just want to reiterate to everybody that if you come home and something doesn’t feel right it doesn’t bother us at all, go ahead and call 911 so we can come out and check it out.”

The investigation has been handed over to the District Attorney's Office.
