A pilot has died in a plane crash while in training for the New York Air Show.

The plane crashed at around 2pm close to Stewart International Airport in New Windsor in Orange County, according to local media sources.

The accident comes less than a week after the tragic crash at an airshow in Shoreham, England, which left at least 11 people dead.

The Shoeham incident, which happened on Saturday, has raised questions over safety at airshows in the UK.

A witness reportedly saw the tail breaking off the plane in the Orange County crash.

Photographer Benjamin Granucci tweeted: "What I saw was the aircraft come in for a dive.

"As it pulled up it suddenly crossed the crowd line and spun towards the ground.

"I’m absolutely sick to my stomach right now.

"Hoping that the pilot is ok, though that would take a miracle IMHO [in my humble opinion]."

A county official confirmed that there had been a plane crash and that the pilot was killed.
