One man has died and 11 people have been injured in a shooting in Minneapolis in the early hours of Sunday morning.

No one has been arrested yet in connection with the shooting, police said in a statement. Officers believe that "individuals on foot" began shooting at around 12.30am before fleeing the scene.

Police have advised people in the city to avoid the part of central Minneapolis where the shooting took place, a commercial neighbourhood with several bars and restaurants.

Minneapolis began reopening bars and restaurants on June 1 as part of a relaxing of coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Some passers-by reportedly rushed to try to help the people who had been shot, before police arrived on the scene shortly afterwards. None of those who were hurt are believed to have suffered life threatening injuries.

Screams could be heard in a live video posted to Facebook in the aftermath of the attack, while photos on social media showed bullet holes in nearby shop windows.

The area is about three miles west of where George Floyd died at the hands of the police around a month previously.

Since then a majority of city councillors have called for the Minneapolis police department to be disbanded, with many city residents calling the force racist.

But this has led to a backlash from others, who have questioned how city residents will be protected from violent incidents such as Sunday's shooting.
