An off-duty FBI agent accidentally shot a man in the leg while dancing at a Denver nightclub, police said.

The agent was dancing at a downtown club at around 12.45am on Saturday when a gun fell from his waistband holster to the floor, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson told the Associated Press.

It discharged when the agent, who was not named, picked it up.

Another reveller was wounded in the leg after the shot was fired, Mr Jackson added.

Footage obtained by local news outlet Denver7 shows the moment the firearm flew to the ground as a man performed a backflip to stunned onlookers.

He had been dancing enthusiastically among the crowd, the clip shows.

The victim, an adult man, was taken to a local hospital in good condition.

Police investigators interviewed the agent before releasing the agent to an FBI supervisor.

An investigation is ongoing and charges will be determined by the Denver District Attorney's Office.

A Denver FBI spokeswoman declined to comment, citing an ongoing investigation.
