President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney hit the campaign trail in key battleground states this week, with the candidates at loggerheads over unrest in the Middle East and the economy.

Mr Obama kicks off his week in Ohio today, with stops in Cincinnati and Columbus. The president is raising campaign cash in New York tomorrow, followed by events in Florida on Thursday, Virginia on Friday and Wisconsin on Saturday — all states that he carried in the 2008 election. Wisconsin is the home state of Republican vice-president candidate Paul Ryan and is considered one of Mr Romney’s better swing state prospects.

Mr Romney’s itinerary includes fund-raising stops in the Los Angeles area today, where he will be appealing to Latino voters.

Both presidential candidates have been trying to bolster their foreign policy credentials after protests across the Muslim world and the killing of US ambassador Chris Stevens in Libya.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday tried to draw the US into taking action against Iran over its suspect nuclear programme. Mr Romney has accused President Obama of not being tough enough on Iran.
