A man from Northern Ireland has plunged to his death at an airport in Bangkok after claiming he did not have enough money for a plane ticket back to the UK.

The 35-year-old fell about 15 metres from the gate three arrivals hall at Suvarnabhumi Airport to the ground floor below.

Minutes earlier, he had attempted to jump from gate eight but was restrained by airport staff, the Bangkok Post reported.

He was found lying unconscious on the floor and was taken to hospital by ambulance, but died later the same day.

His next of kin are in the process of being informed of his death.

The Post reported that the man told airport staff he was trying to raise the funds for a ticket home to the UK shortly before the fatal fall on Thursday (November 26).
