Nicholas Bett: Kenya hurdles world champion killed in car accident

A Kenyan world champion hurdler has been killed in a car crash aged 28.

Nicholas Bett, the country's former 400 metre hurdles champion was killed today in the west of the country, it has been confirmed.

He was killed in Kenya's high-altitude training region when the SUV he was travelling in hit bumps in a road and rolled into a ditch.

His coach, Vincent Mumo confirmed his death today.

He had just returned from the African championships in Nigeria.

During the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, Mr Bett became the first Kenyan to win a gold medal at a distance shorter than 800 metres.

He was a two-time African bronze medallist.

In a tweet, Athletics Kenya expressed condolences to his family and "the entire athletics family."
