Three people have been killed and seven injured in a shooting in New Orleans.

Two men and one woman died at the scene on the 3400 block of Claiborne Avenue, about three miles from the city's French Quarter, on Saturday night.

Several others were injured, identified as five men and two women, who were taken to hospital suffering gunshot wounds. Their conditions are not yet known.

It is believed two suspects wearing hooded sweatshirts approached a group of people on the street and opened fire, striking 10, police said in a statement.

The attackers then fled the scene, and police are now hunting the suspects.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in a statement: "There is no place in New Orleans for this kind of violence.

"I speak for everyone in our City when I say we are disgusted, we are infuriated, & we have had more than enough."

An investigation is ongoing.
