Five Nato soldiers have been shot and wounded by a man in an Afghan army uniform.

It is the second “green-on-blue” attack — where rogue Afghan troops or police target coalition forces — in four days. On Sunday three British troops were shot dead by a policeman at a checkpoint in Helmand province.

Yesterday’s attack took place in Sayed Abad in Wardak province. The victims, believed to be Americans, were receiving medical treatment and an investigation was under way, the coalition said.

Twenty-six foreign personnel have died in 18 green-on-blue attacks this year alone, compared with 20 deaths last year. The three UK soldiers who died on Sunday were named as Warrant Officer Leonard Thomas, 44, of the Royal Corps of Signals; and two Welsh Guardsmen, Craig Roderick, 22, and Apete Tuisovurua, 28. The gunman is in custody.
