Mystery as young boy fishes €100,000 out of River Danube in Austria

A young boy could be set for a huge payout after more than €100,000 were fished out of one of Europe's largest rivvers.

POlice in Austria are working to establish how the sum - worth almost £72,000 - came to be floating down the River Danube.

The cash was found in €100 and €500 notes on Saturday.

A Vienna police spokesman said investigations so far had led to no criminal act in the area to explain the large loss of money.

A young boy had reportedly jumped into the river to retrieve the cash after he spotted the notes. The boy’s age has not been disclosed.

Bystanders alerted police over fears he may be in danger, with officers arriving just as the money was being fished out.

The boy is now said to be trying to claim a share.

A police spokesman said: "The boy said he wanted to bring it to the police, but the question is whether the police found it or the boy,"

In Austria, anyone who finds cash and hands it in to police can claim between five and 10 per cent of the sum.

If the rightful owner cannot be identified in a year then the founder has a right to receive the whole amount.

The Danube stretches more than 1,700 miles originating in Germany's Black Forest before flowing east through Austria and several other countries and emptying into the Black Sea.
