Mohammed Morsi: Mistakes of my first year

Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi marked a year in office today by warning that continued unrest threatens to paralyse the country.

He gave a two-hour TV address, as fighting between pro- and anti- government protesters in the northern city of Mansoura left two dead and 170 injured.

Constant political unrest and a sinking economy have dogged Egypt’s first Islamist leader. He admitted “mistakes” and offered opponents a say in amending the new constitution.

“I was right in some cases, and wrong in other cases,” he said.

“I have discovered that for the revolution to achieve its goals, it needs radical measures.”
