Militant group threatens Princess Anne on Argentina visit

A militant group has issued a threat to the Princess Royal as she visits Argentina.

Anne has travelled to Buenos Aires in her role as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which is meeting in the capital and is the first senior member of the royal family to travel to the country on an official visit in 14 years.

Left wing group Quebracho, which wants Britain to surrender the Falkland Islands to Argentina, issued a statement on its website describing the royal as a "pirate princess" and the "daughter of Elizabeth II, the Queen, who ordered the attack on Falklands in 1982".

It warned that she would have to go into hiding as she is "not welcome" there.

Referring to the islands by their Spanish name, the statement went on: "Because the Malvinas are Argentine and British have to go."

Last night the group was behind a protest staged outside Buenos Aires' Colon Opera House, where the IOC was meeting, in which protesters burnt an effigy of the Queen and and trampled on UK flags, according to reports.

Last year activists from the group attacked the British Embassy in Buenos Aires on the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War.

Several hundred demonstrators pelted police officers with homemade fire-bombs and threw rocks and flaming bottles towards the embassy while they set fire to a Union Jack flag and an effigy of the Duke of Cambridge in protest against the British rule of the islands.

Anne arrived in the capital last night and is expected to stay until September 17. The IOC will vote later today on which city will host the 2020 Olympics.

A spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace said it did not comment on the Princess Royal's security.
