Two people are dead and a gunman is on the run from police after opening fire in a dorm at a US university.

Central Michigan University has been placed on lockdown as police search the Mt Pleasant campus for the gunman, who remains at large.

Police said the suspect is described as a 19-year-old black man who wore yellow mustard jeans and a blue hoodie and that he is "armed and dangerous".

Students have been told to lock themselves inside and not to walk around on campus.

The shooting is believed to be a domestic incident and the two victims are not students, the university said.

The university said in statement: "CMU police confirm two individuals were fatally shot at Campbell Hall on campus this morning.

"The deceased are not students and police believe the situation started from a domestic situation."
