Michelle Obama has urged the Duchess of Sussex to take her time settling into her role as a royal before using it as a platform “to do good”.

The former first lady shared her advice to the 37-year-old Duchess as she spoke of the pressures of living in the public eye.

Speaking to Good Housekeeping, Mrs Obama said she took her first few months in the White House to focus on her family.

“Like me, Meghan probably never dreamt that she’d have a life like this, and the pressure you feel – from yourself and from others – can sometimes feel like a lot,” she said.

“So my biggest piece of advice would be to take some time and don’t be in a hurry to do anything.

“I spent the first few months in the White House mainly worrying about my daughters, making sure they were off to a good start at school and making new friends before I launched into any more ambitious work. I think it’s okay – it’s good, even – to do that.”

After this she explained how Meghan, who married Prince Harry in May could use her status to benefit worthwhile causes.

“What I’d say is that there’s so much opportunity to do good with a platform like that – and I think Meghan can maximise her impact for others, as well her own happiness, if she’s doing something that resonates with her personally,” she said.

The Duchess is well known for her charity work and she previously used her fame as an actress to promote causes.

Mrs Obama’s advices comes amid a busy period for the new Duchess and Prince Harry, who are set to move house in early 2019 as they prepare for the arrival of their first child.

The pair are to leave Kensington Palace to make a home at Frogmore Cottage in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
