Michelle Obama today said it “wasn’t a complete surprise” to hear the Duchess of Sussex talk of racism in the royal family in her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

But the former First Lady, 57, also said she hoped the rift between the Sussexes and the rest of the royals could be closed through “forgiveness and healing”.

She was speaking to interviewer Jenna Bush Hager on NBC’s Today show.

Asked about Meghan’s claim that a royal had asked how dark the skin colour of her unborn baby would be, she replied: “Race isn’t a new construct in this world for people of colour.

“So it wasn’t a complete surprise to... hear her feelings.” But she went on: “The thing I hope for, and I think about: this first and foremost is a family, and I pray for forgiveness and healing for them.”

A statement released by Buckingham Palace last week on behalf of the Queen said that they are “saddened” by how the couple feel and will privately address issues raised around race.
