Australian fans of McDonald's Big Mac "secret" burger sauce rejoiced today as the fast food giant announced the release of a bottled version on sale Down Under.

Previously the sauce had been delivered to stores in sealed containers from an off-site manufacturer, with staff using a special 'sauce gun' to dispense it when making their burgers.

But customers will now be able to purchase a 25ml bottle from one of 920 restaurants in Australia. Stores have a supply of 600 bottles each for sale to customers.

Special edition 500ml bottles are already attracting bids of up to £11,951 on eBay. Proceeds of the sale are going to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The recipe behind McDonald's trademark "secret sauce" had long been a mystery before the American company posted the ingredients on its website back in 2012 - although they claim to have kept the ratio of ingredients confidential.

Made up of a blend of relish, mustard, onion and garlic along with fructose corn syrup and preservatives, the recipe has seen many imitations but none quite like the McDonald's version.

McDonald’s Australia chief marketing officer Mark Lollback told Australia's Daily Telegraph: "Big Mac sauce is one of the most iconic McDonald’s ingredients and people often ask us where they can buy it, so we’re excited to be the first country in the world to offer tubs of Big Mac sauce to our customers."

"I know of people who love adding our special sauce to all types of food – from french fries to McNuggets – so it's going to be interesting to see what Aussies choose to add a spot of Big Mac sauce to over the next month."

However, those hoping to see the bottled sauce in the United Kingdom will be left disappointed, as a spokesman for McDonald's UK division revealed there are no plans for a UK release.
