A hopeless romantic tried to impress his date by jumping between two buildings but became stuck in a gap just 18 inches wide.

The love-struck student decided to jump the gap between a Mexican restaurant and neighbouring bagel shop after the pair climbed onto the roof of the eatery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Instead of falling head over heels for his suitor, the young man fell and became trapped in space just 16 – 18 inches wide between two walls in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services spent several hours cutting through the wall of Quoba restaurant to rescue the man, local media reported.

Eventually, a paramedic was lowered by rope to reach the man, who was rescued at about 6am local time.

He was taken away in an ambulance and is believed to have hurt his ankle.

Bruegger's Bagels posted a sign in their window that advised customers that the store would be closed until 7 am because of "the man who thought it would be a good idea to impress his girlfriend and got stuck between the building walls”.
