A man in the US was injured after a camera installed in his shoe to take photos up women’s skirts exploded.

The 32-year-old was trialling the ‘upskirting’ device at home in Wisconsin when the battery exploded, police said.

He handed himself in at the local police station, reporting a “sex offence”, but was not charged because he had not yet taken any images or video. He was later treated for minor burns, according to local reports.

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said the man had been “counselled on his actions” and then released in a blog post about the unusual incident.

“He said he had purchased a shoe camera that he intended to use to take upskirt videos of females, but the camera battery exploded prior to obtaining any video,” he said.

Upskirting was signed into law as a criminal offence in Wisconsin in 2015, carrying a maximum sentence of three and a half years in prison.

The Voyeurism (Offences) Bill was all set to progress into law, having won support from the Ministry of Justice before it was brought before the Commons.

But Sir Christopher Chope, a barrister and MP for Christchurch, shouted "object" to the private members bill, prompting cries of "shame".

The bill will come back at a later hearing of private members' bills. The next scheduled date is July 6.
