#LostTrumpHistory: Twitter users reimagine Donald Trump in the history books after questioning his 9/11 claims

Donald Trump has been subjected to a torrent of Twitter ridicule after he claimed to have spent “a lot of time” at Ground Zero during the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The US president was speaking about a compensation fund for those who lost loved ones in the 2001 tragedy when he made the comments.

He said: "Many of those affected were firefighters, police officers and other first responders.

“And I was down there also, but I'm not considering myself a first responder.

“But I was down there. I spent a lot of time down there with you."

Critics swiftly pointed out Mr Trump had offered no evidence to support his remarks.

In response, thousands of Twitter users began ridiculing the comments by posting memes of the president inserted into other historical events in which he played no part.

"#LostTrumpHistory" quickly became the social media platform's top trending hashtag.

One user, @JoJoFromJerz, sparked a stream of responses when she posted: "Did you know that Donald Trump was the first aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean? It's true. Believe me.

"I wonder what other, little known facts there are about Donald Trump's accomplishments or roles in history. Please share if you know one."

George Conway, husband of top White House aide Kellyanne Conway and one of Mr Trump's most vocal critics, led the way, writing: "In 2019, astronomer Donald Trump discovered that the Moon was a part of Mars."

Another tweeted: "Did you know Donald Trump invented the exclamation point? Before him, people only ever spoke quietly in print."

@Hambino15 posted, alongside an image of the president's face Photoshopped onto an astronaut suit: "'I won't call myself an astronaut, but I was there when we landed on the moon."

"Trump built the Great Wall of China and made the Mexicans pay for it," added another user.

Another posted an image of the president "at the Last Supper" with the caption: "Trump hosted the Last Supper & made Jesus pay for it."

Going even further back in time, another user wrote: "Stonehenge was his first attempt at a border wall."

American media outlets have also responded to his claims by investigating what Mr Trump was doing on the day of the fatal terrorist attacks.

In one interview at the time, the president said the collapse of the World Trade Center made his own building, 40 Wall Street, New York’s new tallest building.

He said: "40 Wall Street actually was the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan, and it was actually, before the World Trade Center, was the tallest - and then, when they built the World Trade Center, it became known as the second-tallest.

“And now it's the tallest," he told Broadcaster WWOR.
