Residents in a quiet Florida neighbourhood have been warned not to go out alone at night amid fears a serial killer is stalking the streets.

The warning follows the shooting of three people in night-time ambushes over the last weeks in Seminole Heights, Tampa.

At least two of the victims were trying to catch a bus when they were shot, police said.

Police have released an indistinct video of a person wearing a hooded top they think may be the killer.

Benjamin Mitchell, 22, was alone at the bus stop after dark when he was shot on October 9.

The three people - two men and a woman - were shot and killed seemingly at random in the past two weeks.

Monica Hoffa, 32, was walking through the neighbourhood two days later to meet a friend when she was shot.

Anthony Naiboa, 20, was trying to find a bus stop when he was shot on October 19.

Police say they think a single killer is behind all three attacks because they happened so near to each other at roughly the same time in the evening and without any obvious motive.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that police have been escorting children to school bus stops in the morning to keep them safe.

Brian Dugan, the Tampa police department’s interim chief has warned people not to go out alone.

Following a residents meeting last night, city mayor Bob Buckhorn said people should turn on their porch lights.

“For the men and women in the (Tampa Police Department) this is personal and were not going to stop until we catch this guy

“We’re not leaving until we catch this guy but we need you to turn those lights on, we need you to tell us what you see.

“We have added over 1,000 streetlights in Seminole Heights. You’ve seen our men out there. We’re not stopping until we catch this guy.

Authorities are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the killer or killers.
