At least 50 people have been confirmed dead and more than 200 injured in a shooting in Las Vegas, making the music festival rampage the deadliest gun massacre in modern US history.

Revellers fled in terror as the killer fired from a room on the 32nd floor of a hotel and casino overlooking Las Vegas's famous Strip.

After police shot dead the gunman, named as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, the number of casualties was still being evaluated by emergency services.

Here are the other deadliest single-day mass shootings in recent US history.

Pulse nightclub, Orlando, June 2016

On June 12, 2016, 29-year-old security guard Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured 58 others in a hate crime terrorist attack on Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Mateen was shot dead by police as they freed hostages from the club.

Virginia Tech, 2007

On April 16, 2007, 32 people were killed across two locations at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, by Seung-Hui Cho, a 23-year-old student. Cho then killed himself.

Sandy Hook, 2012

Adam Lanza, 20, killed 20 children and six adults on a shooting spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012 Lanza had shot dead his mother, Nancy Lanza, prior to the rampage, and later turned the gun on himself.

Luby's cafeteria, Texas, 1991

35-year-old George Hennard killed 23 people on October 16, 1991 after crashing his pick-up truck through the wall of Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen. He then committed suicide.

San Ysidro McDonald's, 1991

James Huberty, 41, opened fire with an Uzi, shotgun and handgun in a McDonald's in San Ysidro, California, on July 18, 1984, killing 21 adults and children. He was gunned down an hour later by a police marksman.

University of Texas, 1966

Former US marine Joseph Whitman killed his wife and mother before opening fire from a tower of the University of Texas on August 1, 1966. He killed 16 and wounded at least 30 before being shot dead by police.

Edmond post office, Oklahoma, 1986

Postman Patrick Henry Sherrill killed 14 colleagues in Oklahoma with three handguns on August 20, 1986, before shooting himself in the head.

San Bernardino, 2015

Married couple Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik killed 14 when they gunned down staff at San Bernadino's Inland Regional Centre on December 2, 2015.
