ISIS has released a photograph of what it claims was the bomb used to down the Russian plane over the Sinai desert last month.

The picture of a yellow can of Schweppes Gold and two other bomb components was published in the extremist group’s English language magazine.

The image appeared underneath the caption: “EXCLUSIVE – Image of the IED used to bring down the Russian airliner.”

NBC News reported that alongside the images, the magazine wrote: "After having discovered a way to compromise the security at the Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport and resolving to bring down a plane belonging to a nation in the American-led Western coalition against ISIS, the target was changed to a Russian plane.

"A bomb was smuggled onto the airplane, leading to the deaths of 219 Russians and 5 other crusaders only a month after Russia's thoughtless decision."

The magazine also allegedly published a picture of passports belonging to some of the people who died in the plane crash.

The Metrojet flight from Sharm el-Sheikh to St Petersburg crashed in the Sinai Peninsula on October 31, killing all 224 people on board, after an onboard explosion.

Islamic State previously said it downed the plane, which was mainly carrying Russian tourists, to avenge Russia’s air campaign against the extremist group in Syria.

Russia’s security service has agreed a bomb brought down the plane, but Egyptian authorities have declined to comment on what caused the crash.

Earlier on Wednesday, November 18, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Egypt understands the pain of the victim’s friends and families.

Since the downing of the jet, the UK banned flights to Sharm el-Sheikh and Russian banned all flights to Egypt a day later.
