Instagram down: Social media app crashes with huge outage affecting users across the world

Instagram last night crashed for users across the world.

Those using the app in North America were the worst hit, but some in the UK were also affected.

The first reported problems were shortly after midnight (UK time), with a huge spike in people being unable to use the site.

Instagram’s support team confirmed the app was experiencing issues due to server maintenance and apologised to users.

In a statement on Twitter, it said: “We have an ongoing server maintenance right now.

“Please bear with us and we're sorry for the inconvenience that this may cause you.”

Data from troubleshooting website Downdetector showed that there had been more than 3,000 reports of the site crashing.

Instagram later said the issue had been resolved.
