Seventeen people have been killed after a fire broke out at a busy karaoke bar on an island in Indonesia.

The blaze tore through the Inul Vizta Karaoke club in Manado on Sulawesi island, at about 1am local time on Sunday.

Hundreds of people were singing in private karaoke booths when the fire sparked on the bar's second floor.

A further 71 people were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after becoming trapped inside the building, officials said.

Police said some panicked clubbers smashed windows and fled into the street, while many others became stuck in black smoke billowing from the second floor as there was only one access door to the building.

Workers scrambled to put the fire out with extinguishers but struggled to contain the flames.

Fire crews were rushed to the scene and took several hours to bring the blaze under control.

A police spokesman said authorities were still investigating the cause of the fire, adding that a preliminary investigation indicated it may have been sparked by a short circuit.

The 17 people killed, all Indonesians, are reported to have died from smoke inhalation rather than burns.
