New York commuters were taken aback when a hungry rat was spotted brazenly munching on a slice of pizza on the subway.

In the short video posted by Michael Courant, the bold rat was caught dragging the huge slice across the tracks.

Taking several breaks, the rat struggled to move the slice which was twice its size.

In the post which went viral, Mr Courant wrote: “I JUST SAW PIZZA RAT! I repeat: I JUST SAW PIZZA RAT! Lexington Ave/59th Street on the downtown 6 track #Blessed.”

Many people commented on the rat’s activity.

One person wrote: “Pizza Rat for President. Make Rats Great Again!”

Another person said: “That rat is strong.”

While another person said: “Pizza rat is back!”

This is not the first time a rat with a taste for pizza has been spotted on the subway.

In September 2015, a rat was spotted dragging pizza down some steps.

Since then commuters have spotted many rats eating various New York snacks ranging from pretzels to bagels.

It is not known if the rat seen in the latest video is the same rat that was spotted eating pizza in 2015.
