Hundreds of pepperoni pizzas block motorway in lorry spill

Francesca Gillett10 August 2017

Hundreds of pepperoni pizzas brought traffic to a standstill after spilling onto a major US motorway.

The 18-wheel truck carrying the frozen pizzas was sliced open as it passed under a bridge on Wednesday, sending the meals tumbling into the road near Little Rock, Arkansas.

Around 1,000 of the pizzas, which were DiGiorno and Tombstone brands, blocked the entire westbound carriageway of the major interstate road.

The road, part of a major link between Dallas and Memphis, was shut for four hours as recovery trucks were seen scooping up the pizzas.

Even as the pizzas were collected up, the road appeared to be smeared with tomato and cheese.

A spokesman for the state’s Department of Transportation office, Danny Straessle, said the bridge only had “cosmetic damage”.

DiGiorno and Tombstone were pizza brands created separately in the US before being purchased by Nestlé.
