Human remains have been found stuffed in a suitcase with body parts also scattered around an area of San Francisco.

Police said a major search was launched after the grisly find in a suitcase in the city centre.

Other body parts were found nearby and police are working to determine whether they belong to only one victim or several.

Detectives have launched a hunt for a suspect but did not reveal further information.

A police spokeswoman said: "Investigators are still searching to determine if there are any other body parts in the area.

"This was an extremely gruesome crime scene."

The find was made after police were called to reports of a suspicious package in a street.
