An Instagram account celebrating men reading books on the New York subway has amassed more than 120,000 swooning followers in the space of two weeks.

The Hot Dudes Reading account posts images taken secretly of attractive men with their noses in books as they travel through New York City.

A variety of different dudes feature in the images, ranging from clean-cut Patrick Bateman types to more rugged Elijah Wood lookalikes.

Witty captions imagining what the men are thinking are posted alongside the images.

One description reads: “I'm sure he's reading a collection of post-war Russian short stories, but really thinking of how he made love to his French girlfriend this morning and the gluten free toast they shared after.”

The creators of the account, who wish to remain anonymous, are a group of male and female New Yorkers who told The Huffington Post “appreciate men with good looks and good books.”

In London a similar account was created in 2011 named Tube Crush encouraging women to upload their photographs of hot men they spot on the London Underground.

Facebook page ‘Women who eat on Tubes’ was closed down last year following a backlash after some of the images attracted lewd comments.

The group invited members to post images taken of women eating on the London Underground and sparked an ‘eating protest’ from campaigners.
