25 February 2020

Egypt state TV says the country's former President Hosni Mubarak, ousted in the 2011 uprising, has died at 91.

Mr Mubarak's regime was toppled as part of the Arab Spring, which saw a number of regimes in north Africa and the Middle East overthrown.

He was in power for around 30 years before begin forced to resign on February 11, 2011, after almost three weeks of protests.

Two months after he stepped down, Mubarak was arrested.

He was sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for conspiring to murder 239 protesters in the 2011 uprising.

In 2015 the former leader was covicted of diverting public funds, alongside his two sons, and jauled for three years.

Mubarak spent time in prison and in hospital up until 2017 when he ws cleared of ordering the killings following a retrial.

Many Egyptians who lived through Mubarak’s time in power view it as a period of autocracy and crony capitalism. His overthrow led to Egypt’s first free election, which brought in Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

Mr Morsi lasted only a year in office after mass protests in 2013 led to his overthrow by then defence chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is now president.

Allies of Mubarak have gradually being cleared of charges, and laws limiting political freedoms have raised fears among activists that the old regime is back.

Mubarak had long maintained his innocence and said history would judge him a patriot who served his country selflessly.
