An animal welfare charity has launched an investigation after a horrifying video emerged of a man killing a kangaroo by repeatedly cutting its throat in Australia.

In the disturbing footage, a Chinese man approaches the wounded kangaroo as it sits helplessly on the floor before cutting its throat dozens of times with a hunting knife.

The kangaroo attempts to stand up and flee, but the knifeman violently grabs the animal by the tail and pins it down with his right foot.

The stricken animal can be heard growling in pain as he then begins to slash at its throat.

At points in the video a friend of the man can be heard laughing in the background.

When the animal finally collapses on the ground, the man can be seen crouching down next to the stricken animal appearing to brag to his friend.

The clip, believed to be filmed in New South Wales, was circulated widely on Chinese social media and has since sparked an investigation by the local RSPCA.

Stefania Kubowicz, a spokeswoman for the New South Wales branch of RSPCA, told the BBC that animal cruelty in the country can be punished by five years in prison if there is intent to make to make the animal suffer.

She said: “We get a lot of alerts like this that come via social media.

"If people spot such things online, they can get in touch with us as was the case with this video."
