A black politician has revealed a homeowner called police on her while she was door-knocking on the campaign trail.

Sheila Stubbs was canvassing for election to the Wisconsin Assembly when she was questioned by officers in front of her eight-year-old daughter and 71-year-old mother.

Police had received a 911 call about a “suspicious vehicle”. The male caller thought “they were waiting for drugs at the local drug house”.

Democrat Ms Stubbs told CBS: “I felt humiliated, I felt outraged, I felt angry, I felt embarrassed.”

She recalled how the officer asked: “’How do you know which doors to knock on?’ I said ‘the walk list’. She said: ‘Can I see it?’ I said ‘sure’. And then she said: ‘I am really sorry that happened to you.’”

Ms Stubbs won nearly 50 per cent of the party primary vote in her county of Madison. Because she is running unopposed, she will take her seat on the state assembly in January.

The former probation and parole officer will be the first African-American to represent Madison, and had a message for the man who called police.

“I want them to see I made it,” she said. “I survived, and I am now your representative.”
