The heart-stopping moment a cyclist ploughs into a deer while speeding down a hill has been caught on film.

Footage captured by a camera attached to the rider's helmet shows the deer leap out in front of the bike from behind a road barrier.

It causes the rider to flip over and leaves them lying apparently motionless on the ground.

The crash happened last week near Sausalito, near San Francisco in California.

It is believed that both the rider and the deer escaped without serious injury.

The video of the incident has been viewed almost a million times since it was uploaded to YouTube.
