Five people have died after a US military cargo plane crashed and burst into flames near an airport.

It is thought that five people were on board when it plunged to the ground after taking off from an airport in Savannah, Georgia, on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Georgia Air National Guard confirmed at least five people were killed.

A photo tweeted by the Savannah Professional Firefighters Association shows the tail end of a plane and a field of flames and black smoke as an ambulance stands nearby.

The only part of the plane that remained intact was the tail section, Chris Hanks, a spokesman for the association said.

The tail section was sitting on a highway and the ground in front of it was black and littered with debris, he added.

The plane is understood to have crashed on Highway 21 at the intersection of two roads.

The US Air Force said it belonged to the Air National Guard’s 156th Air Wing out of Puerto Rico.
