A French football fan was taken to hospital today after apparently being hit by an £80,000-a-week footballer’s Porsche as the player returned from a humiliating defeat in Spain.

The fan was hit by the sports car owned by Thiago Motta, the Brazilian-born midfielder with Paris St Germain (PSG) who lost 6-1 to Barcelona on Wednesday night.

After his team returned to Paris Orly airport at 5am today, 34-year-old Motta was picked up by his wife, Francisca.

"Their car was surrounded by a gang of angry PSG fans, who were giving Motta a piece of their mind," said a witness.

"One of the fans was standing in front of the car, which lurched forward and hit him. He was taken to hospital. Other players were also being stopped as they tried to get home."

Police confirmed that a man received medical attention after being found lying on the ground with a back injury. He was taken to a hospital in nearby St Denis.

A video posted by the BFM news channel showed the unruly scenes, which involved around 40 supporters.

They shouted insults at the players and technical staff, and threw objects, said police, who are investigating the incidents.

PSG are one of the highest paid teams in the world, and were expected to hold on to a 4-0 first round lead so as to beat Barcelona in the European Champions League game.

Instead they were roundly beaten 6-1 and went out of the competition, with the French media suggesting it was the most humiliating defeat in the club’s history.

PSG is owned by the Qatar Investment Authority, and has risen to the elite of European football over the past decade.
