A four-year-old girl has been shot dead in a suspected road rage attack in the US while her horrified parents looked on.

The child, who has not yet been named, was shot in the head on a highway in New Mexico on Tuesday afternoon after shots were fired from a passing car.

She was taken to the University of New Mexico hospital but later died, police said.

Police were frantically hunting for her attacker as they appealed for witnesses to the murder.

They believe the suspect drove off seconds after the shooting on the Interstate 40 in Albuquerque.

It was not immediately clear what happened in the moments leading up to the attack, but detectives have said they do not think the family knew the shooter.

The girl's parents are not believed to have been injured in the shooting.

Albuquerque Police Department Chief Gorden Eden said the attacker had "no way to explain [their] way out of this".

He told KOAT-TV: "This is a complete disrespect of human life.

"This is something that should not be happening in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“I've seen tragic loss of children in car crashes.

"To me, this is one of those crimes that is unexplainable. There is no way to explain your way out of this."
