Facebook users across the world have complained of being unable to access the social media site on Android devices.

The issue mainly seems to be affecting users in Europe and the United States, with parts of South America and the Far East also affected.

The problems started shortly after 11.30 BST, according to website DownDetector, which has received hundreds of reports of issues.

Almost half of those affected have reported a "total blackout" of the app.

Problems opening the app are believed to have come about after a new update was pushed out to users.

A number of people say they have reinstalled the app but with the same outcome.

One person commented: "Everytime I click my app it opens and immediately closes. Tried reinstalling with no luck."

Another added: "Same problem as everyone else, it won't stay open for longer than 1-2 seconds then self closes and says Facebook has stopped working!"
