A bizarre Urban Outfitters top which barely even covers the chest has been ridiculed online.

The ‘extreme crop tank top shrug’, retailing at $16 (£13), sits above the bra and covers a very narrow section of the wearer’s chest.

Its description reads: “The ultra-sexy way to layer with this teeny cropped tank top by Out From Under.

“Cropped above chest for the coolest layered look featuring a crop neck and thin shoulder straps.”

It has now been taken off the clothing giant’s website but unimpressed fashion fans were quick to make their opinions known on social media.

Alanna Okun, a senior editor at lifestyle website Racked, tweeted a screenshot of the clothing item with the words: “hell is empty and all the devils are here.”

Many of her followers echoed her views, with one saying: “Seriously? What is that? Why don't they just put her out in just a bra and claim the "Shrug" is invisible?”

Another joked: “When you want to go out in public in just your underwear but someone said you HAVE to have a shirt.”

The Standard has contacted Urban Outfitters for comment.
