Eight people have died after the lift they were in plummeted 18 floors on a Chinese construction site.

The victims were taken to hospital following the tragedy in the north-eastern Shandong province but were later pronounced dead.

Officials in the city of Longkou said the elevator of the apartment block plunged from the 18th storey of the building, which was under construction.

China has a chequered record on issues of workplace safety despite improvements in recent years.

Regulations are commonly ignored by managers keen to cut costs.

Earlier this year, a woman was found dead in a lift in the central Chinese city of Xian.

The elevator had been improperly switched off by maintenance workers on January 30. Her remains were not discovered until March 1.
