Pop star Dua Lipa was left in tears after young women were forcefully dragged from the audience at her Shanghai show for standing up and waving gay pride flags.

The 23-year-old singer, from London, became visibly upset when security workers removed fans from the audience at the show in China on Wednesday night.

In a statement, she said she was "horrified by what happened" and told fans that she "would love to come back when the time is right and hopefully see a room full of rainbows."

She added: "I will stand by you all for your love and beliefs and I am proud and grateful that you felt safe enough to show your pride at my show."

Video footage shows security officials violently pulling one young woman from her seat as the pop star performed hit single "One Kiss" to the crowd.

Witnesses claimed that bouncers removed fans because they were dancing, standing up and waving gay pride flags which was not permitted.

The singer fought back tears as she told the crowd: “I just want to create a really safe environment for all of us to have fun. I just want us all to dance.

"I want us all to sing. I want us all to have a really good time.”

The shocking video shows a security guard pulling a young woman, who was bouncing in her seat, forwards and tries to drag her from the building.

Other fans stepped in to try and stop the security officials.

Further footage from outside the venue appears to show security guards kicking one fan.

There were reports from those at the concert, that people waving the rainbow LGBT flag had also been removed.

The star was wrapping up her China tour and the previous night played Guangzhou where fans were allowed to stand up.

In recent months, LGBT content has been censored from the country’s social media.

Homosexuality is not illegal in China and in 2001 it was removed from an official list of “mental illnesses”.

However, under the rule of President Xi Jinping, there have been crackdowns on social media and even LGBT events.
