Donald Trump has provoked outrage after appearing to mock a disabled reporter over an article written about him 14 years ago.

The billionaire businessman and Republican presidential candidate performed an impression of New York Times journalist Serge Kovaleski, who suffers from a congenital joint condition, at a rally in South Carolina on Tuesday.

Referring to Mr Kovaleski as a "nice reporter", he said "now the poor guy, you gotta see this guy" before waving his arms and stuttering.

He continued using a put on voice: "Uh I don't know what I said. Uh I don't remember. He's going like 'I don't remember. Maybe that's what I said.'"

The New York Times has described his actions as "outrageous".

A spokeswoman for the newspaper told Politico: "We think it's outrageous that he would ridicule the appearance of one of our reporters."

Mr Kovaleski, a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter, suffers from arthrogryposis, a chronic condition that affects the movement in his arms.

Mr Trump is currently on the campaign trail as he hopes to secure the Republican nomination to contest the Presidential election next year.
