Domino’s pizza has employed a team of road workers to fix potholes on roads across America to stop food being ruined during delivery.

The fast food giant has come up with the scheme to stop poor road surfaces from damaging pizza when it is being transported from stores.

It has also started to provide grants to US towns to help fill potholes through the "Paving for Pizza" initiative.

"Potholes, cracks, and bumps in the road can cause irreversible damage to your pizza during the drive home from Domino’s," a statement on the website reads.

“We can't stand by and let your cheese slide to one side, your toppings get untopped or your boxes get flipped.

"So we're helping to pave in towns across the county to save your pizza from these bad roads,” it concluded.

The project allows customers to nominate their town on a website by ZIP code.

The chosen towns will receive funding to fix their crumbling roads and ensure the integrity of pizza remains intact, the company said.

Prior to launching the nationwide campaign, Domino’s previously helped towns in Texas, California, Georgia and Delaware fix their roads.

Domino's USA President Russell Weiner said in a statement: “We don't want to lose any great-tasting pizza to a pothole, ruining a wonderful meal. Domino's cares too much about its customers and pizza to let that happen."

To prove the damage caused by dodgy roads, the website shows in-box footage of what goes on inside a pizza box under a variety of road conditions.

A spokeswoman for Domino's told the Standard they have no current plans to roll the initiative out in the UK.
