A US fast food chain opening branches in Malaysia has been told it cannot use the word 'dog' on menus because it will offend the country's Muslim population.

Auntie Anne’s Pretzel Dog must be renamed Pretzel Sausage, say officials.

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department told the U.S. company that the word ‘dog’ should not appear on any of its menus as part of conditions to obtain halal certification.

Dogs are thought to be unclean in Islam.

Auntie Anne’s, which already has 45 outlets in Malaysia, said it will comply with the request.

Malaysia is a majority Muslim country, where Muslims represent approximately 60 per cent of the country’s 30 million people.
