Piers Morgan was torn to shreds online and bombarded with pics of dads carrying their kids in a papoose after he said they were "emasculating" - and fathers should be more like cavemen.

The TV presenter and former Daily Mirror editor faced a flood of backlash after he posted a picture of Daniel Craig wearing a papoose and mocked fathers who don't carry their baby in their arms.

But fathers hit out against the broadcaster and columnist, known for spouting controversial opinions, by posting a flurry of selfies of them with their babies - mostly wearing papooses, to show up his statements.

Morgan said on twitter with a recent picture of Craig: "Oh 007.. not you as well?!!! #papoose #emasculatedBond".

"He’s not carrying it," he added later

"He’s using an emasculating papoose. James Bond would never use a papoose to carry his babies."

He went on to call a picture of a man with his child sitting on his shoulders a "proper dad", and to Stig Abell he said: "Come on mate, put the papoose away & carry your baby properly. Like a caveman."

Even hollywood action hero actor Chris Evans came to Bond's rescue, and said: "You really have to be so uncertain of your own masculinity to concern yourself with how another man carries his child. Any man who wastes time quantifying masculinity is terrified on the inside."

Morgan responded to criticism over his remarks.

Jody Vance told him: "Dads who step up during the tough early months, where babies typically “need” mom, are the real #Heroes"

"I stepped up," he responded. "just never with a papoose. They’re ridiculous."

And other women swooped in on the row to say the sight of dads wearing a papoose as "attractive.

Claire Shields wrote: "Nothing more attractive than a man looking after his child. Wearing a papoose when walking for any length of time is just smart. (Also an attractive quality)"

Dad Justin Justin Bingham made a poignant response to Morgan's diatribe. He said: "There are a few simple rules with children.

"If a 4 year old hands you a plastic toy phone, you answer it. If you're invited to a tea party in a princess castle, you attend it.

"If you make a child, and are a good father, you carry them to the end of the earth and back."

And it wasn't long before dads started flooding twitter with selfies of them carrying their children.

Ultimately Morgan turned on his Twitter respondees.

"Papoose-Gate perfectly personifies how pathetically self-righteous, hysterical & humourless the Twitter mob has become," he said. But when his own comment that wearing a papoose is emasculating was itself "self righteous, hysterical and humourless," he said. "No, it's a fact."
