Copacabana beach crash: 'Baby killed' and 15 hurt as car ploughs into pedestrians in Brazil

A car has ploughed into pedestrians on a crowded pavement at Rio’s famous Copacabana beach.

According to initial reports, an eight-month old baby was killed and 15 people were injured in the crash on Thursday.

Authorities said the driver had an epileptic seizure and lost control of his car. He has been detained by police.

Witnesses described how the vehicle careered over a bicycle path before hitting people as it crashed through tables and chairs at the popular tourist hotspot.

The shocking incident happened at 8.45pm local time, 10.45pm GMT.

Police have stressed that the incident is not being treated as a terror-related.

Dramatic images from the scene show a black car with its windscreen smashed on the beach.

Others show emergency service teams carrying patients on stretchers as shocked witnesses look on.
