Boris Johnson welcomed the inauguration of Donald Trump on Friday, saying he was looking forward to a “strong bond” between the UK and US.
The Foreign Secretary made the remarks moments after Donald Trump was sworn in as the new US President.
Mr Johnson said: "I want to offer my warmest congratulations to president Donald Trump on acceding to the most important political office in the world and I know that billions of people will be willing him to succeed in the months and years ahead in the very great challenges that he faces.
"We in the United Kingdom will work hand in glove for the stability, the prosperity and the security of the world with president Donald Trump."
Mr Johnson, who had criticised Mr Trump during his election campaign, also tweeted: “Congratulations to @realDonaldTrump @POTUS on his presidential inauguration day.
“Look forward to continuing strong UK - US bond.”
He added: “Congratulations to @mike_pence @VP on his inauguration today.
“Look forward to working together #specialrelationship”
Mr Johnson had previously slammed the new American leader during his controversial campaign over remarks about the capital, accusing him of “playing the game of the terrorists”.
The business mogul had claimed there were “no-go areas” in London for police because of a threat from Muslims.
It sparked the former Mayor of London to remark: “I think he’s betraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit to hold the office of President of the United States.
“I would invite him to come and see the whole of London and take him round the city – except I wouldn’t want to expose any Londoners to any unnecessary risk of meeting Donald Trump.”
