Eight children drowned in a Chinese river after one fell in and the others tried to save their friend.

State media said that the primary school-aged group had gone to play at a beach on the Fu River in south-west China on Sunday.

Their bodies were recovered by Monday morning.

The children came from Mixin, a town near Sichuan province on the outskirts of the sprawling metropolis of Chongqing.
