California has been hit by heavy rainstorms killing at least six people and prompting evacuations.

The region has been battered by torrential rain for the past week, causing flash flooding and downing trees.

Four people died in storm related car accidents, while one died when a tree fell on a homeless encampment in Oakland and another died fleeing a falling tree.

Some areas previously hit by wildfires including Malibu were evacuated amid concerns of landslides.

Authorities in Malibu closed schools on Thursday.
